Apple Opposes New Sex Aid

OSAKA, Japan — Ichiro Kameda is the president of a two-man company in Osaka whose product is involved in a huge legal battle with American computer giant Apple.
"Putting it simply, the fight is all over what I call our beat generator," Kameda said. "There's a small device with three different, sound-activated motors. It's a revolutionary invention. You can plug it in to iPods or mobile phones. It can also be programmed to operate only for certain voices."
The beat generator is actually a women's sex aid that, when inserted, responds with vibrations when activated with sound.
Kameda calls the device a gPod for several reasons:
1. There are specific connotations to the G-spot. 2. The Japanese word for masturbation, jii, is pronounced "gee." 3. It looks just like a normal iPod.
Even though the Japanese patent agency allowed him the right to use the device in August 2005 and the trademark was approved a few months later, he hasn't been able to sell the product thanks to the lawsuit.
"This Japanese lawyer rolled up on my doorstep one day, saying he represented Apple and carrying a letter asking me to change the product name," Kameda told the Japanese newspaper Shukan Gendai.
The paper asked Kameda to stop using the gPod trademark.
"The product planned for use with the trademark 'gPod' is a sex aid and masturbation aid," it read. "If this product comes onto the market, you will be forced to take all sorts of legal measures to deal with it. We would like to avoid a fight over this and would be prepared to cover any costs you have incurred."
The offer didn't faze Kameda, who laughed it off.
"What they were telling me was that they'd pay if I agreed to stop using the trademark," he said. "Of course I turned them down. If they sue me, I'll fight."
To that extent, Kameda's plan is to offer the gPods for sale -- in Japan only -- at the end of the month, despite the computer company's warnings to the contrary.
