Planned Parenthood: Free Plan B
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Planned Parenthood centers in Sioux Falls and Rapid City, Iowa, will offer the emergency contraceptive Plan B for free today. The drug normally costs $30-$40.
The giveaways will happen from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST in Sioux Falls and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. CST in Rapid City. Planned Parenthood will also offer the pills to men.
Plan B, commonly known as the "morning-after pill," actually comprises two pills that contain a heavier dose of the drug used in many regular birth control pills. According to the FDA, if the pills are taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, it can lower the chances of pregancy by 89 percent. Plan B is most effective when taken within 24 hours of sex.
Plan B was recently made available to individuals 18 and over without a prescription. Those 17 and younger are required to have a prescription -- available at Planned Parenthood -- in order to receive free pills.
