Surprising Sex Study Results
NEW YORK — A study conducted by Dr. John Santelli and his colleagues at the Mailman School of Public Health suggests that 86 percent of the recent decline in teen pregnancy rates was a result of improved contraceptive use.
Fourteen percent of the decline was attributed to teens waiting longer to engage in sexual practices.
According to Santelli, the findings suggest that abstinence-only sex ed isn't enough to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
Santelli said that the U.S. seems to be following recent patterns in other developed countries where the availability and the increased use of contraceptives and condoms have led to a marked decline in teenage pregnancies.
Santelli also said that the study raises serious questions about the federal governmant's funding of abstinence-only educational programs that leave out information that explains the benefits of contraceptives and condoms.
The study will appear in the January issue of the American Journal of Public Health.
