The media is still digging around to find the name of the company that partnered with adult film producer Vivid Entertainment to copy its porn titles into high-definition Blu-ray format. According to industry statistics, there are only 8 such companies worldwide that can currently replicate Blu-ray discs - two of which are controlled by Sony who is playing a "no we won't - yes we will" game regarding the replication of adult-oriented content. There are five other companies authorized which have contracts to produce Blu-ray titles and as part of that agreement are unable to work closely with any adult company. If our math is correct, 8 authorized companies, less 2 that are controlled by wishy-washy Sony, take away the 5 that are working with the folks at Disney… that leaves just one company that could possibly - if that Sony info is true - be working with Vivid. But Vivid it seems isn't talking and that's what's got the media all stirred up into a frenzy.Vivid co-chairman Steve Hirsch told the press that it will not name the company in order to protect its source from rivals who are all having difficulty finding access to a company that will work with adult content. At press time, Vivid is the only company in the adult industry that has committed to using Blu-ray Disc. Everyone else it seems took the "AEE bait" and opted to go with the HD-DVD format instead.According to Vivid, they will release several titles on Blu-ray and monitor the sales - especially against other HD format sales. Due to the high cost involved in producing content in Blu-ray, the company may abandon the format if sales are not strong enough. Says Hirsch, "Blu-ray is extremely expensive to work with," noting that costs for authoring in the new format is approximately 4x to cost of working with HD-DVD and 3X more expensive than merely replicating in HD-DVD.
