Microsoft Wins Judgment Against Porn Spammer

KARLSRUHE, Germany — For the second time in as many months, Microsoft has secured a court victory over a spammer accused of violating the company’s Hotmail terms of service agreement to push porn online.
The regional appeals court in Karlsruhe found a German spammer, whose name was not disclosed, guilty of sending unsolicited email using Microsoft’s Hotmail service without the company’s permission.
The spammer had used Hotmail to promote his pornographic website for several months, according to the court, which said the ruling makes the misuse of a trademark name in connection with spam a criminal offense subject to prosecution.
The unidentified spammer will be barred from distributing spam via Hotmail or face a fine in excess of $300,000. The ruling also requires the spammer to provide Microsoft with detailed information about his spamming efforts.
According to a Microsoft spokesman, the court ruling marks a step forward for the company’s campaign against spam in Germany, which lacks an anti-spam statute.
Prior to the ruling, German spammers could not be subjected to high fines or criminal prosecution.
In September, an English porn site operator who used spam sent from his Hotmail address to direct traffic to his website was ordered to pay Microsoft $84,000 after a civil court ruled that the man violated the terms and conditions of his account.

Cell Phones May Kill Sperm

LONDON — A recent study has reported that heavy use of mobile phones may damage men’s fertility. Research indicates that men who used a cell phone for an average of four or more hours a day had fewer sperm. Additionally, their sperm moved slowly and were of poorer quality.
The Ohio study, which involved 364 men, was presented to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in New Orleans.
Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio tested sperm samples from 364 men while they were being treated at fertility clinics in Mumbai, India, with their partners. It was found that those who use their cell phones for more than four hours a day had the lowest average sperm counts.
Men who used cell phones for 2-4 hours a day had an average sperm count of 69 million per milliliter and had moderately healthy sperm. Those who didn’t use them at all had the highest average sperms counts at 86 million per milliliter. Theirs was the highest quality seen as well, as the BBC reported.
"There was a significant increase in the most important measures of sperm health and that should definitely be reflected in a decrease in fertility, which is seen worldwide,” said Dr. Ashok Agarwal, who led the research. "People use mobile phones without thinking twice what the consequences might be. It is just like using a toothbrush, but mobiles could be having a devastating effect on fertility. It still has to be proved, but it could be having a huge impact because mobiles are so much part of lives."
Dr. Agarwal suggested that the radiation from mobile phones may harm the sperm by damaging DNA by affecting the cells in the testes which produce testosterone.
But Dr. Allan Pacey, a UK expert for the British Fertility Society, said that it was unlikely that cell phones were to blame as they are not near the testes while in use. He believes that it is being sedentary that’s the cause.

Avoiding the Pitfalls of Doorways, Gateways and Bridge Pages

Years ago a search engine optimization technique was developed to influence or manipulate the positioning of websites in the search engines. This technique is referred to as the creation of doorway, gateway or bridge pages. The concept is to build pages that rank highly for specific keyword sets. This is done by calculating the search engines algorithm and then building a page that ranks highly in that particular search engine based on the calculations.
There are a variety of programs that are marketed that will automatically create these doorway, gateway or bridge pages for you. You enter specific information into predefined form fields relative to the page that you want to optimize, and the program generates a page that is optimized for the selected search engine and keyword sets. These pages are referred to as machine generated pages.
Unfortunately, this technique has been abused over the years by many consumers and SEO/SEM consultants alike. We've seen websites that had 5 or 6 pages of core content and then hundreds of gateway pages that were developed to target just about every keyword set the site was optimized for. Typically, only a few of those pages may have ranked well, the rest were ineffective. Hence, the billions of web pages indexed as indicated in the next paragraph.
Today, this technique is frowned upon by the major search engines and directories. When you see numbers pertaining to billions of web pages being indexed, you can be assured that a large percentage of those are gateway, doorway or bridge pages. The search engine spiders or robots are more intelligent then they were a few years ago. These machine generated pages are being dropped from the search engine indexes on a regular basis, or they are buried so far down in the SERP's (Search Engine Results Pages), that they would never be found. At times, the entire domain that the pages reside on may receive a ranking penalty and/or be banned from the search engines index. Do you want to take that chance?
How do search engines know about these pages? If the pages are machine generated and untouched after generation, there is a specific footprint that the page has (the structure of that web page). When you look at the footprint of thousands of these pages, they are easy for search engine spiders to detect. Most doorway, gateway or bridge pages are orphaned. This means that they have no links pointing to them, but they have links pointing from them. The links pointing from them are usually aimed at your home page or a specific page on your website that the keyword set is targeting.
Believe it or not, this technique still works today with some search engines. Most, if not all of the major search engines and directories have published guidelines that state they do not want doorways, gateways or bridge pages in their indexes. These types of pages dilute the quality of the results and take up valuable resources.
If your website was designed without the consultancy of a search engine marketing professional, then you will probably need to make changes. If your website was built using Flash technology (.swf - movie file), or uses heavy graphics instead of an equal to, or greater than, balance of text to graphics, then you will need to make changes. If you cannot make the changes suggested by the SEO/SEM consultant, then you may need to consider using techniques that may or may not be considered Best Practices in SEO/SEM. It is your choice. Just be prepared for the long term implications of using such strategies as they may, or may not be detrimental to the success of your website.

Google Releases Adwords Optimizer

The Google Adwords team released a new beta tool that will allow Adwords users to test and track the success of their PPC landing pages. Called Adwords Website Optimizer this new tool is not widely open to the public quite yet but you can apply to become a beta tester. As with most Google applications I find this program to be very straight forward and clever. The concept allows for users to create a single landing page, implement Adwords Optimizer code, then configure different variations of the page from within the Optimizer (changing the title, picture, content... anything). Each variation will be served up to Google viewers who click on the advertiser's PPC listing and then the actions that the viewer takes will be tracked to calculate the effectiveness of the landing page in comparison to the other versions. Reports are provided along with some very straight forward statistics to make it simple for the average Adwords user to use the system successfully.Time will tell just how well received this free service will become but I am betting it will be a powerful addition to the Adwords toolchest. In fact I would be surprised if MSN and Yahoo are not already playing catch up.Check out the Adwords Optimizer demo here or sign up for the Beta test.

Traffic exchange in adult business

Nowdays there are really a lot of ways to earn money in Internet. They are different. But the most lucrative way is adult business. What is the most important thing in adult business? Of course, it’s traffic, or number of people, who had visited your website. Because if you’ll have a lot of traffic, your profit will be extremely high, if you don’t – you won’t have any profit at all. So, every adult webmaster attempts to get as much traffic as he can. And one the most popular way to get more traffic is traffic exchange. The main point: there are many so called partnership programs, which help webmasters to exchange traffic with each other. Their principal of operation consists in traffic exchange between adult webmasters by placing promotional stuff on partner’s spots. There are also some sites, which work like collectors. When guest enters such spot, he sees galleries from different sites. In such way, visitor always have the choice and 1 man can visit 5 or 6 sites, on which visitor can come back rather often. So, we can say that partnership spots are very useful for adult webmasters, because with the help of such spots, they will have a lot of advantages such as increase in traffic due to equal exchange of unique adult-visitors with other sites of partnership system. On some spots webmasters can set their own traffic exchange preferences, for example, they can set option to exchange traffic only with Russian partners, or the other way. Some partnerships also make different offers to webmasters, such as selling or buying their traffic. In conclusion, we can say that partnership programs and traffic exchange between webmasters are really very useful and profitable things, because if you’ll be a bit lucky, and your gallery will be posted at www.thehun.com, you will have a fantastic traffic growth, and later – fantastic profits increase. We even can say that traffic exchange is the most lucrative method in adult business, because it really can make your income grow. Very often it’s really very profitable to exchange some of your traffic for another one (for example for traffic from other country) to make your receipts higher for next period.

Did-It Knocks SEO - SEMs Respond

A fun debate is brewing at Search Engine Watch Forums on a controversial DMNews article by David Pasternack named Troubled times for SEO firms from yesterday. David has three points, all making a case for PPC being more challenging than SEO. Here are the three main points:
1. Marketers Are Discovering That SEO Isn't Rocket Science
2. Marketers Are Realizing That SEO is a "Fix-it-Once" Task, not an Ongoing Service
3. Marketers Are Wary of Pushing the SEO Envelope
Now, let's look at each point:
(1) SEO isn't rocket science, but neither is PPC. I do not want to take away from either. There are some very smart SEOs that can really do wonders, but SEO as a whole is not rocket science. PPC isn't rocket science, same deal - if you know PPC like Kevin Lee from Did-It, you can try to make it into rocket science and deploy all these fun statistical models (same can be done with SEO) and run with them. But PPC is not rocket science either.
(2) I think he may be confusing "search engine friendly design" with SEO as a whole. SEO includes "search engine friendly design" and I am a strong believer that search engine friendly design can be achieved through a build it once strategy. Build a solid frame work, and you are set with that. You have your title tags, meta data, body content and site architecture all set out from ground up.
But it doesn't mean you do not have to continually work! You have to add content often, you have to get links, you have to get good press and do the whole social thing to rank well over time.
And the same thing goes with PPC. You must have a good framework to build off of. This way you can run your campaigns, make changes, track those changes and continue. But without a solid framework, making changes to a campaign can be cumbersome.
PPC is just immediate. You pay, you get traffic, you convert - or you hope that is the case. SEO takes time and you normally do not see immediate ranking results from any one thing right away.
(3) I can't say anything about this. This goes to a person's personality and type. You don't have to "push the envelope," you just need to spend time and resources to make your site the best. If you don't, then you may want to get risky.

Usage statistics reported by Opera in August revealed that Google search is the most popular .com site visited using Opera Mini™, followed by Gmail.com, Friendster.com, MySpace.com, Yahoo Messenger and hi5.com.
"We see that users are browsing with Opera Mini™ in the same as they are accustomed to on their desktop. They use Mini to find information or network, even bid on eBay while on-the-go," says Rolf Assev, Chief Commercial Officer, Opera Software.

Yahoo Updates Toolbar and Bookmarks

Yahoo is releasing a new version of its toolbar with a powerful new bookmarking feature that integrates seamlessly with Yahoo web search, and features a "radical" new user interface.
The new Yahoo toolbar has an improved search function that uses an auto-complete feature to make suggestions as you type. Yahoo has also made it easier to create your own custom buttons on the toolbar. If you want to create a button that takes you to a particular site, enter its URL and Yahoo will automatically search for the site's favicon logo and use it for the button, if one is available.
The new toolbar goes beyond simply saving the title and URL of a web page, which is what most bookmarking tools do. Instead, the new Yahoo bookmarks service stores a thumbnail image of a page, and optionally save the full text of a web page.
Adding a thumbnail image to a bookmark helps recall—it's easier for people to remember an image of a page than it is to recall what a page is about from a simple title and URL, in most cases.
Yahoo has also made it easier to organize your bookmarks with this new version. "If you have a huge list of bookmarks, the new version of Yahoo bookmarks allows you to organize those in a very convenient fashion," said Tomi Poutanen, Yahoo's director of product management for social search.
The bookmarking feature uses folders as an organizing scheme. You can save a bookmarked page directly into an existing folder, or create a new one on the fly as you're saving a bookmark. You can also manage your bookmarks later and create as many new folders as you like.
You can also add tags to your bookmarks, again either when you initially save one or later. If you check the "use tags" box as you're saving a bookmark, Yahoo will suggest tags to associate with a page, but I found these suggestions ranged from unhelpful to downright worthless as meaningful tags for most of the pages I bookmarked.
Alternately, you can save pages without worrying about categorization or tagging. By default, bookmarks not saved into a folder are placed in an "uncategorized" folder. To organize bookmarks, you can simply drag the thumbnail image of a page into a folder, or mark selected pages and move them all with a single command. There are also folders that display recently saved bookmarks and frequently used bookmarks.
You can edit bookmarks, adding additional information such as tags, a description, or comment.
The folder organization scheme is handy, but Yahoo has also integrated bookmarks into the search functionality of the toolbar. This means you needn't take the trouble of organizing bookmarks into folders—you can simply rely on the search box. This works well, since Yahoo is storing the full-text of web pages when you bookmark them.
When you enter a search query into the toolbar, the auto-complete feature includes potential results from your bookmarks, displaying both title and any description you may have added.
While all of your bookmarks are available via the toolbar, you can also sign in to your bookmarks page on Yahoo and do other interesting things with them. This page offers different views of your bookmarks, including a full view, which shows thumbnails and the information you've associated with each bookmark, list view, which is just a simple list of titles, or grid view, showing thumbnails only.
You can sort these views by title or date. You can also create sorted views using folders or tags. The point is to make it easy to manipulate your bookmarks according to the particular task you have at hand.
Unlike Yahoo's Del.icio.us and MyWeb, bookmarks saved using the new bookmarking feature are not intended to be made public and shared. While you can share bookmarks with others either by email or instant messenger with other individuals, they aren't public in the way that a Del.icio.us bookmark is, for example.
That's deliberate. Poutanen said that the upgraded Yahoo bookmarks functionality is intended for the 20 million registered users of the Yahoo toolbar that have been using the system since it launched in 1997. Del.icio.us, by contrast, has just 1 million registered users, and appeals to "early adopters" who are more comfortable with the idea of tagging web pages.
"Tagging still has a learning curve for mainstream users," said Poutanen.
Nonetheless, Yahoo is working to make the two approaches operate from the same underlying technology, and over time, the two approaches to saving web content will likely merge.
In all, I like the new bookmarking feature—it's clean and crisp and makes organizing bookmarks or searching for I find Yahoo's toolbar less useful than Google's toolbar, but I do like the integration of bookmarks into the search box.
The biggest downside of the new Yahoo toolbar is that it's only available for Internet Explorer. The new toolbar is free, and is available for download at toolbar.yahoo.com.

Mozilla releases new version of Firefox

AN JOSE, California (XFN-ASIA) - The Mozilla Foundation released on Tuesday an updated version of its popular, free Web browser, Firefox, which features improved search functions and more protection against spyware.
Firefox is the product of hundreds of volunteer software developers around the world, who collaborate to design new features and fix bugs -- unlike proprietary browsers such as Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer, whose source code is kept secret. Mountain View-based Mozilla Foundation bills itself as a nonprofit ''dedicated to improving the Internet experience for people everywhere.''
Firefox 1.0 was released officially in November 2004, and it quickly became one of the most downloaded open-source programs in the world. It's particularly popular among home PC users and college students.
Within 99 days of its release, the program was downloaded more than 25 million times. By August, it had been downloaded 200 million times.
Mozilla officials estimate that more than 70 million individuals are using Firefox, which has been translated into 35 languages and is available for Windows, Mac or Linux operating systems.
Improvements to Firefox 2.0 make it tougher for spammers and other advertisers to put ''spyware'' and other invasive programs on users' computers.
Some changes, such as an integrated spell check, are meant to help Internet users who post text on blogs, community sites such as MySpace.com or YouTube, or on collaborative Web sites known as ''wikis.''

AOL Turns to Verisign for ENUM Mapping to Mobile IM Community

Trust services provider VeriSign (News - Alert) announced today that AOL (News - Alert) will use its ENUM Data Access Service to deliver instant messaging traffic to wireless devices within North America.
ENUM bridges next-generation IP communications to traditional telephony by providing a critical framework for mapping and processing network addresses. But its uses go well beyond voice. By transforming the telephone number into an access-agnostic address, it can then be used by a variety of devices and applications such as text messaging, email and/or location-based services – as well as voice.
In addition to telephone number mapping, the service also requires a real-time check to determine if the number has been ported to another service provider. The VeriSign ENUM services enable secure interconnection of networks, devices and applications across different access technologies, easing the introduction and expanding the reach of multimedia services and IP voice communications.
Of the 42 million active AIM users that make up the largest instant-messaging community in the world, approximately 10 million people using AIM on their cell phones, according to AOL. Those users in aggregate send an average of 30 million messages per day.
“AOL’s use of the VeriSign ENUM Data Access service is a strong statement of the power of ENUM in action and VeriSign’s ability to deliver on new technologies for the convergence of all types of communications,” said Bill Wolfe, senior vice president of communications at VeriSign.

Anti-Porn Campaign to Begin Next Week

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Phil Burress, the leader of the conservative Citizens for Community Values group, will launch the White Ribbon Against Pornography campaign next week in a bid to raise awareness about what he calls the social ills of adult entertainment.
The campaign seeks to raise awareness about America’s pornography problem by asking supporters to wear white ribbons.
According to Burress, the campaign grew out of his own battle with a pornography addiction.
“I personally believe because I lived through it that it was a pornography addiction that destroyed a marriage,” Burress said. “So I do believe it’s one of the leading causes, if not the leading cause of divorce in America today.”
Burress said he hopes that by wearing the white ribbon, supporters will be able to spark conversations about the issue, which will help raise awareness.
“Our own surveys indicated that the average age of exposure to pornography is now nine-years old,” Burress said. “And 95 percent of our children have seen it at that age. We need to talk to our kids about pornography because it’s out there, you can’t escape it.”
The White Ribbon campaign begins Oct. 29 and runs through Nov. 5.

Amazon launches the Spam Cube in the UK

The Spam Cube is a piece of anti-spam hardware which is being launched through Amazon in the UK, designed to sit between a broadband modem and your PC/laptop, scanning incoming email for unwanted messages.
This hardware will retail at around £100, but the real question is why internet users should have to pay for hardware to deal with this problem. Isn’t this a problem which could be dealt with some other way? You know, ISPs, that sort of thing...?
The volume of spam email is undoubtedly a huge problem, with email monitoring firm Postini reporting that 80% of email traffic in September was spam, as well claiming to block 22 million viruses from reaching consumer inboxes.
There has been much criticism over the lack of effective action taken by ISPs on this issue, with the feeling that they could do much more to stop more of this garbage before it gets anywhere near their customers’ inboxes.
BT has at least taken a step towards this recently, with the introduction of their Spam-buster service, which aims to filter out more spam at their end, but other service providers have yet to follow suit.
While any device which tackles this problem is welcome, I fail to see why internet users should have to pay £100 to deal with a problem which could be solved by more effective software and greater effort from the ISPs who sent the spam our way in the first place.
And of course all of this is a poor reflection of anti-spam software, most of which seems equally inept at blocking real spam.

IBM says Amazon violated five patents

IBM filed two lawsuits Monday claiming Amazon.com "built its business" by infringing upon five IBM patents.
International Business Machines sued Amazon in federal court in eastern Texas, saying four years of licensing talks over the patents had broken down. The Texas court is known for patent expertise.
IBM said it's entitled to "royalties on the billions of dollars in revenue that Amazon has received."
"We filed this case for a very simple reason," John E. Kelly III, senior vice president of technology and intellectual property at Armonk, NY.-based IBM, said in a statement. "IBM's property is being knowingly and unfairly exploited."
IBM, which has one of the world's biggest collections of patents, claimed that Seattle-based Amazon is infringing patents on systems that fashion recommendations for customers based on past purchases, as well as patents on Web-site navigation and data-storage technologies.
"These patents are fairly core to Amazon's business," Edward Barbini, an IBM spokesman, said. "Amazon.com has built its business model on these patents."
The patents are based on electronic-catalog technology developed in the 1980s and electronic-commerce inventions from the early 1990s.
Amazon.com was founded in 1994.
"IBM is a very aggressive licensor but almost never sues," said Robert Yoches, a patent lawyer with Finnegan Henderson Farabow Garrett & Dunner in Washington, D.C., who isn't involved in the case.
"I guess after four years they figured they weren't going to wear down Amazon, Yoches said.

The suit isn't likely to affect Amazon's business, said Tim Ghriskey at Solaris Asset Management.
"There may be a royalty involved that they are going to start paying IBM if indeed there are patent violations," Ghriskey said.
"The fact they were willing to let IBM file a lawsuit means Amazon must disagree with IBM. Even if they lose, that shouldn't be that onerous an issue," he said.
Amazon.com spokeswoman Patty Smith said the company hasn't seen the suits and had no immediate comment.

Adobe getting Serious about YouTube

According to a report from comScore Media Metrix, there were about 1.4 billion video streams in August. Of course, much of this activity came from video sites like Google's YouTube, MySpace and Yahoo!.
To keep the online video revolution moving, there is something very important: editing tools. Basically, editing video is no easy feat, which often requires expensive software and lots of training.
Well, it looks like Adobe Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADBE) saw the opportunity and ceased it. That is, the company recently purchased Serious Magic, which has a variety of video tools, such as Vlog (for editing) and Video Communicator (for clip production).
True, Adobe already has an extensive suite of video tools. However, the surge in online video has been unexpected and Adobe realized there are holes in its product line. While Serious Magic is a small deal, it is important in that it highlights that a big company like Adobe can be quick.
Something else: over time, as online video gets more popular, it should have a bigger impact on Adobe's bottom line. After all, one of the most popular video systems is from Adobe -- that is, Flash.

Google launches Custom Search Engine for bloggers and developers

24 October 2006 - Google has launched a tool for website developers and bloggers to create customised search on their pages.
Google Custom Search Engine makes it easier to create a custom search engine on any site. Users can make the engine point to the content they want by choosing what pages should be indexed, how the contents should be prioritised, whether others can add to the index, and what the search pages should look like.
These custom search engines are then monetised through Google AdSense in order to generate revenue for Google and for the sites themselves.
Google sites JumpUp.com and RealClimate.org as two sites that have already implemented the custom search successfully. Although both of those sites belong to business, individuals can also use the tool to, for example, “create search engines pointing their friends to sites about their favourite pop stars and place them on their personal homepages”.

Crackdown on Child Predators May Impact Freedom of the Internet

New York - The growth of technology has changed our lives dramatically. Computers were viewed as a luxury or even an extravagance 30 years ago. We relied on television, newspapers, and radio as primary sources of news and information. Cable, modems and online services were virtually nonexistent.
Today, computers are prevalent in businesses, homes, schools, libraries, and even airports. The World Wide Web provides instant access to news, reference information, shopping, banking, stock trading, auctions, and travel information and reservations. People routinely use the Internet to take college courses, play games, listen to music, and view videos. Chat rooms and e-mails are now replacing telephones as our favorite means of long-distance communication.
The proliferation of computer technology obviously has enhanced our lives in many ways, such as enabling improved productivity and efficiency at work, school, and home. Anyone with access to a computer and modem now has unparalleled recreational and educational opportunities.
Unfortunately, criminals are also using modern technology to prey on innocent victims. Computers and the Internet have made the predator's job easier. Historically, child predators found their victims in public places where children tend to gather -- schoolyards, playgrounds, and shopping malls. Today, with so many children online, the Internet provides predators a new place -- cyberspace -- to target children for criminal acts. This approach eliminates many of the risks predators face when making contact in person.
The sheer number of young people using computers today makes the concern for them well founded. Recent years have seen a great increase in access to and use of the Internet. By the end of 1998, more than 40 percent of all American homes had computers, and 25 percent had Internet access. Children and teenagers are one of the fastest growing groups of Internet users.
An estimated 70 million kids are online today. With so many youth online and vulnerable to predators, it is extremely important for parents, law enforcement officials, prosecutors, and victim service providers to know as much as possible about Internet crimes against children so they can prevent victimization and prosecute offenders. Even when computers are not available in the home, children have access at schools, libraries and after-school programs.
Traditionally, both intrafamilial offenders and strangers have found that young children and teenagers are perfect targets for criminal acts because they are often trusting, naive, curious, adventuresome, and eager for attention and affection. However, the most attractive factor to predators is that children and teenagers historically have not been viewed as credible witnesses.
Today, the danger to children is even greater because the Internet provides predators anonymity. Whether the victimization occurs in person or over the Internet, the process is the same - the perpetrator uses information to target a child victim. For example, the predator may initiate an online friendship with a young person, sharing hobbies and interests. This may lead to the exchange of gifts and pictures.
Just like the traditional predator who targets children in person, the online predator usually is willing to spend considerable time befriending and grooming a child. The predator wants to build the child's trust, which will allow the predator to get what he or she ultimately wants from the child.
Although no family is immune to the possibility that their child may be exploited and harassed on the Internet, a few factors make some children more vulnerable than others. Older children tend to be at greater risk because they often use the computer unsupervised and are more likely to engage in online discussions of a personal nature. Some victims become unwitting participants as they actively participate in chat rooms, trade e-mail messages, and send pictures online.
Troubled or rebellious teens who are seeking emancipation from parental authority can be susceptible to Internet predators. The risk of victimization is greater for emotionally vulnerable youth who may be dealing with issues of sexual identity. These young people may be willing to engage in conversation that is both titillating and exciting but appears innocent and harmless. Unfortunately, Internet interactions that initially appear innocent can gradually lead to sexually explicit conduct.
Child victimization on the Internet is a complex matter. The full impact of such victimization on children is not completely understood. Family dynamics often play a significant role in children's denial of a crime and their willingness to participate in the investigation and prosecution.
A child's ability to acknowledge and accept the crime can be linked to family values, peer pressure, and feelings of guilt, shame, and embarrassment. Denial and recantation can be common among children who unwittingly participated in the crime. Because of these issues, the greatest challenges facing law enforcement and victim service professionals are to identify the victims, protect their privacy, and serve them without further victimization.
Until more knowledge is gathered about Internet crime and its effects on victims, law enforcement and victim service professionals will continue working on Internet child exploitation using the tactics and standard approaches that have proved effective for working with other types of child victims.
In the meantime, Americans must resist the quick-fixes proposed by politicians and advocacy groups who wish to place controls on the internet and violate the civil liberties of internet users. While internet crime is a problem the vast majority of users are in no way involved in criminal activity. Knee-jerk proposals on hampering free use of the internet must be resisted.

Facebook playing hard to get with Yahoo!

SAN JOSE, Calif. — While YouTube and Google got hitched after a quick flurry of negotiations, Facebook is going through a more agonizing courtship.
Search giant Google and online video upstart YouTube agreed recently to a $1.65 billion union after a week of talks.
But Facebook, the popular social-networking site, is apparently nowhere close to an agreement with Yahoo!, despite monthslong talks and widespread anticipation about the pairing.
Negotiations first stumbled when Yahoo!'s falling stock made it harder for the search giant and Facebook to agree on a price Yahoo! could afford, reportedly between $800 million and $1 billion.
But another obstacle, say people familiar with the situation, has been Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's 22-year-old founder, chairman and chief executive, who has already rebuffed several suitors and isn't prepared to sell the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company unless some conditions are met, including price and control after a sale.
One of the most widely watched young entrepreneurs since Marc Andreessen co-founded Netscape Communications in 1994 at age 22, Zuckerberg exerts a remarkable amount of control over the company, which sources say is "fundamentally pretty far apart" from Yahoo! at this point.
He is still Facebook's largest shareholder despite two rounds of venture capital, and is, according to associates, very much calling the shots.
PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, a Facebook board member and its first investor, said: "Mark is not focused on selling quickly. Some people get nervous about the boom and the bust and maybe the boom again; not him."
"People like to characterize Mark as nonchalant," added Facebook's 36-year-old chief operating officer, Owen Van Natta. "I've never known him to be inaccessible."
"He works very hard. Sometimes I have to step back from him and remind myself that he's not a 45-year-old."

However the Yahoo! talks turn out, Zuckerberg's trajectory is already reminiscent of another tech star.
Echoes of Gates
Like Bill Gates, Zuckerberg enjoyed a privileged upbringing and became interested in computers early on.
Raised in Westchester County, N.Y., the son of a dentist and a psychologist, he began programming at 10. Later, at the elite prep school Phillips Exeter Academy, he began writing code, including a computer version of the board game Risk.
His next step was Harvard, where he promptly transformed his dorm room into a start-p incubator, enlisting roommates Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes to help.
His first project allowed students to see who had enrolled in a given class; his second let them rate one another's class pictures on the Web. (School officials forced him to pull the site almost immediately.) The third was Facebook.
Campus sensation
What followed changed Zuckerberg's life. Facebook — an online directory of Harvard students that restricted anyone outside of the college from contacting users, and that let users be visible only to those they chose — became a sensation.
Within weeks of its February 2004 launch, three-quarters of Harvard's undergraduates had signed up. By that fall, the site, launched at other campuses across the country, had 250,000 registered users.
The experience is addictive, says Danny Shea, a senior at Princeton. "If you overhear someone talking about so-and-so, you look them up on Facebook. Before you know it, 15 minutes have passed."
It didn't take long for Zuckerberg to drop out of Harvard (like Gates), move West with Moskovitz and, later, Hughes (now Facebook's chief technology officer and lead spokesman, respectively).
Fast-forward two years. Facebook, which has since opened its doors to high-school students, has $38 million in venture funding, 150 employees and a $200 million advertising deal with Microsoft.
The company won't disclose revenues or profits, but sources say numerous media companies have come knocking, interested in Facebook's 9.5 million registered users.
Baptism by fire?
Recently, Facebook introduced a new feature that automatically distributed updates to members about the activities of their peers. Although the information had always been available on profile pages, users protested the move as an invasion of privacy. Within days, the company apologized and agreed to turn it off.
Facebook's former president, Sean Parker, who had co-founded startups Napster and Plaxo, also quietly left the company this year, for undisclosed reasons. Said Van Natta of the split: "Sean continues to be a shareholder."
"It's literally baptism by fire," said angel investor and Facebook shareholder Ron Conway of Zuckerberg's past two years. "You have to figure out who you are going to take your advice from because you can't take it from everybody," he said. If you listen to "the wrong ones, you're dead."
Charting the course
So far, Zuckerberg has managed to chart his own course. "Many people recognize Zuck for being a technology 'boy genius,' but I think what makes him more unique is his conviction," said Hadi Partovi, who first crossed paths with Zuckerberg in 2004. "I've seen Mark make unpopular decisions in hiring and firing and in product design, but he pushes for what he wants."
Zuckerberg's convictions extend to treating his employees well. For example, despite Van Natta's protests, Zuckerberg pays a monthly stipend to employees who move to within a mile of Facebook's offices, where apartment rents are often high.
Catered food is brought in offices daily. And in September, Zuckerberg rented a tent at Shoreline Amphitheatre, providing tickets and food to anyone wanting to see the Dave Matthews Band.
Whether Zuckerberg is able to hang on to Facebook's audience should the site sell to another company remains to be seen. So does how long he has a choice about selling.
Facebook has acknowledged its hypergrowth has slowed, and high-school students haven't taken to the site as expected. The company also plans to open its doors to anyone with a valid e-mail address, which may turn off loyalists.
Perhaps the biggest question, however, is whether Zuckerberg can work for someone else.
That Facebook still reads "A Mark Zuckerberg Production" on each of its pages hints at more than the founder's sense of humor.

Trio sentenced to 8 years in U.K. cyberattack scheme

Three Russian citizens were sentenced Wednesday to eight years each for extorting money from U.K. e-commerce companies.
Ivan Maksakov, Alexander Petrov and Denis Stepanov were accused of receiving $4 million from firms that they threatened with cyberattacks.
The trio concentrated on U.K. Internet gambling sites, according to the prosecution. One bookmaker, which refused to pay a demand for $10,000, was attacked and brought offline--which reportedly cost it more than $200,000 a day in lost business.
Maksakov, Petrov and Stepanov were arrested in 2004 through a joint operation between the U.K. National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) and the Russian authorities.
The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), which has now replaced the NHTCU, confirmed that the three had been jailed and fined 100,000 rubles (about $3,700) each. However, SOCA declined to say whether the convictions would help reduce cybercrime in the U.K. or encourage more firms to come forward about blackmail demands.
Senior police sources have expressed concern that U.K. companies keep quiet when they are hacked or blackmailed, rather than informing the authorities. This can create a climate where malicious hackers are encouraged to launch attacks.

Google Doubles Third-Quarter Profit, Shares Rise

(AXcess News) Reno, NV - The world's No. 1 search engine, Google, reported an increase of 92 percent in profit for the third-quarter ending Sept. 30th after the closing bell on Friday, nearly double that of the same period a year ago, thanks to a hefty increase in Web search use.
Google reported net income of $733.4 million, or $2.36 a share, for the third-quarter, up 92 percent from $381.2 million, or $1.32 per share, in the third quarter of 2005.
Revenue climbed over 70 percent to $2.69 billion, Google said, due to double the rate of search growth over its closest competitor, Yahoo, in September.
"Our third quarter results are a testament to the strength of our network of advertisers and partners, as well as our continuing focus on users," said Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google. "We were particularly pleased with the contributions of our international business in a seasonally weaker quarter."
Shares of Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) climbed nearly 8 percent in after-hours trading to $460.00 per share after the Mountain View, Califorina-based Internet search provider released its earnings results for the third-quarter, which were released after the close of trading.
Nielsen/NetRatings said that Google's search requests amounted to half of the search engine volume being tracked, compared to rival Yahoo!, which only captured 23.4 percent.
Google Sites Revenues - Google-owned sites generated revenues of $1.63 billion, or 60% of total revenues, in the third quarter of 2006. This represents an 84% increase over third quarter 2005 revenues of $885 million and a 14% increase over second quarter 2006 revenues of $1.43 billion.
Google Network Revenues - Google's partner sites generated revenues, through AdSense programs, of $1.04 billion, or 39% of total revenues, in the third quarter of 2006. This is a 54% increase over network revenues of $675 million generated in the third quarter of 2005 and a 4% increase over second quarter 2006 revenues of $997 million.
International Revenues - Revenues from outside of the United States contributed 44% of total revenues in the third quarter of 2006, compared to 42% in the second quarter of 2006 and 39% in the third quarter of 2005. Had foreign exchange rates remained constant from the second quarter through the third quarter of 2006, our revenues in the third quarter of 2006 would have been $19 million lower. Had foreign exchange rates remained constant from the third quarter of 2005 through the third quarter of 2006, our revenues in the third quarter of 2006 would have been $35 million lower.

4 Steps To Prepare For Web Traffic

Most web site owners who say they want more traffic don't realize they're not ready for it and the more money they spend to get it, the more they’ll lose!
Is that you?
If you haven’t done the four things on this list, the traffic you bring to your web site won’t do you much good and the more you spend to get it, the more money you’ll waste.
Here’s the list:
1. SET UP TRACKING FOR EVERY STEP OF YOUR SALES PROCESS
You need to be able to test and improve the effectiveness of your landing page, your sales letter or home page and your "call to action" whether a sale or an opt-in to a newsletter. You can’t test what you don't track.
When you split-test each step of your sales process, your web site is the worst it will ever be right now. Since you'll always be testing against something new, you’ll only make changes to your headline, copy, offer or other aspects of your site if they beat what you have now.
2. DESIGN YOUR SITE TO CREATE A VISITOR ACTION
To get your visitors to take the action you want, you should consider a few things in it's design that many businesses don't. They are:
- Design your site so that a visitor knows what your site is all about in ½ second. Have only one goal per page - multiple goals and many choices lead to inaction. If you have several goals, just use a different page for each.
- Use a headline that tells your customer what you can do for them (NEVER use your company name as a headline!)
- Have a "call-to-action" that asks them to do something. In most cases, you'll do best by "selling" them on opting in to get something free instead of asking for the sale right away.
- Make sure to capture your visitor’s contact info so you can continue to market to them until they are ready to buy. Not everyone is ready to buy now and they may need to develop more trust in you before they buy. And, that's not all...
Your web site should not be about you but tell your visitor what you can do for them. Answer these questions from your visitor’s point of view for every page: (1) why should I come to your site - what problem(s) will you solve for me? (2) why should I take whatever action you are asking for? (3) is there any reason I should ever come back?
It's critical that you do NOT let your web designer make changes to your sales page for search engine optimization. Save that for other pages. Your sales page should be optimized to get your visitor to take the action you want, not for SEO.
3. OPTIMIZE YOUR CONVERSION RATE BEFORE YOU SPEND MONEY ON TRAFFIC
You can get visitors in an hour using pay-per-click with Google or Yahoo). Get your conversion rate from visitors to sales/opt-ins to a respectable level through testing before you spend a lot of money on traffic.
I've changed a headline on a Google ad for a client and had it increase the results by a factor of 10. Going through the testing process can make the difference whether you make money or not. Google provides the tools to track your pay-per-click campaigns and their new "Google Analytics" system lets you track everything you can think of - and, on top of that, it's free. (It's still in beta testing so type "Google Analytics" into Google to find the link.)
4. KNOW YOUR VISITOR VALUE
Before you pay for visitors with any substantial traffic generating program, you need to know what a visitor is worth. This is a combination of what your average sale or lead is worth divided by how many visitors it takes you to get a sale/opt-in. If your visitors are worth $1.00, it doesn’t make much sense to pay $3.00 to get one, does it?
Once you know that number, you will want to continually split-test and work to increase your visitor value.
Now that your site solves a problem(s) for your customers, is easy to navigate and you know what a visitor is worth, you can buy traffic because you'll know which traffic sources are profitable and which are not.
DON'T BE MISLEAD
The Internet offers a wonderful opportunity to do scientific marketing. Since everything can be tracked, you can make marketing decisions based on hard facts instead of opinions.
If your webmaster doesn't know how to do this, find one that does. The capability to improve your web results is readily available and is not expensive, so why not take advantage of it?
Most small businesses don't even know about this, so use it to get an advantage over your competitors!

Internet Marketing, the Trend of the Future

MakeMoney101.com will soon be opening its doors, giving webmasters access to the website tools that they need to increase traffic, conversion and overall effectiveness of their websites.
(PRWEB) October 18, 2006 -- MakeMoney101.com will soon be opening its doors, giving webmasters access to the website tools that they need to increase traffic, conversion and overall effectiveness of their websites.
Recent studies have shown that Internet businesses have been one of the fastest growing businesses recently. This may be for many reasons, people needing extra income, the unstable economy, or the desire to run a business of their own. On the surface, Internet marketing is truly no more challenging then running a physical business of your own, with a few twists that one must adapt to.
Internet business owners face many challenges everyday, as do traditional business owners. One of the biggest challenges is competing with businesses on a global level. Instead of having to compete in their local markets, they are faced with experts in their fields throughout the world who are competing for the same market.
Due to this recent explosion, a new website has emerged. Makemoney101.com was designed to help those considering starting their own Internet business prepare and conquer the challenges they will face. “The Internet is a complex world, and webmasters have to think 5 steps ahead of their competition to be successful”, Kim DeMonte, owner of Makemoney101.com, says.
This website will offer the webmaster the tools to keep those 5 steps ahead of the competition. Makemoney101.com will also offer webmasters all of the tools necessary to build, add on, or create a website from scratch. “We are not offering a get rich quick scheme. We are offering real solutions for real problems that every webmaster has”, Ms. DeMonte said.
Kim DeMonte continued: “We want to give webmasters the full package. This package includes the tools that are necessary for their websites to compete in a highly competitive market place, a networking center for webmasters to connect with others in the business, and relationships that can help them to make a network of their peers which they can use to further their success online. All at a reasonable price.”

Blogs, networking Web sites help small business owners connect, get tasks done

NEW YORK - The Internet has become more than just a critical tool for small businesses - for some owners, it's a way of life.
A reporter's very informal survey of several small business owners found that some of the most useful sites include those that help them network with other entrepreneurs. They also favor sites that help their companies communicate, either internally or with other businesses, or that help get tasks like teleconferencing done, sometimes at low or no cost.
The blogs that are growing in popularity in an Internet society are also being embraced by small business owners.
Marc Hedlund, chief product officer at Wesabe, a personal finance startup based in Berkeley, Calif., said blogs have been a great help as the company prepares to launch.
"For pretty much any kind of business, there's someone who's writing about getting that business to work and what works for them," he said.
It was through a blog that Wesabe found a site to help it with project coordination and to set up an online chat room for its employees, www.37signals.com. "It replaced e-mail for us," Hedlund said.
Hedlund noted that Web sites, like any other service that a small business might use, need to be tried out and compared with one another. So while 37signals.com worked for his company, it might not be as helpful for another business that supplies similar services; some shopping around and perhaps some trial-and-error are called for.
Christina Carathanassis, president of New York-based ChristabellesCloset.com, swears by Web sites that help businesswomen network or that help business owners find resources.
One of her favorites is www.ladieswholaunch.com, which, like other business networking sites, allows owners to post profiles and connect with each other. "You can ask for advice from other women who have had a similar experience," said Carathanassis, whose company is an online designer resale boutique. She also uses www.theswitchboards.com.
The beauty of networking sites and blogs is their ability to bring many business owners together from not only around the country, but around the world. So an owner in a small town or rural area isn't isolated; the Internet can function as a sort of virtual chamber of commerce, continuing education resource and business-to-business matchmaker.
Carathanassis noted that portals like Yahoo have what are called groups, sites that bring together people with similar interests and concerns. She's used them to get in touch with other business owners.
Alicia Rockmore, CEO of Buttoned Up, an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based company that makes products to help people organize their lives, likes Web sites that help get work done. She noted www.efax.com, which makes it easier to send and receive e-faxes. Again, there are other sites that can help you accomplish these tasks. She also uses www.freeconference.com, which provides conference calls at little or no cost, and www.tradepub.com, which helps professionals get free trade publications.
This does beg the question, what's the best way to find sites that will do such tasks and help you run your business? You could search through Yahoo or Google, but, Rockmore said, "word of mouth seems to work the best." In other words, find the right Web site for you in much the same way that you choose an accountant or human resources consultant - by asking other small business owners.
Here again, the blogs can come in handy. You can also find them via word of mouth, but Hedlund said he's found them through search engines.
Obviously, this is just a smattering of the kinds of help small business owners can get. There are government and private sites dedicated to giving small companies information on running their companies and managing employees; the Small Business administration's site, www.sba.gov and Inc. magazine's www.inc.com are just two. There are many government and industry sites that supply information that can help with market research, including the Census Bureau's www.census.gov and Advertising Age's site, www.adage.com.
These sites are easily findable through searches, but again, if you want a sense of how helpful and user-friendly they are, ask around - those blogs and networking sites can help you with that too.

YouTube Deletes Copyrighted Clips

The U.S. online video service YouTube deleted nearly 30,000 files after a Japanese media group said the clips were pirated and violated copyright laws.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday that the request from the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers highlighted the mounting criticism of the proliferation of allegedly pirated material on YouTube, the California startup that was recently sold to Google for more than $1 billion.
YouTube users upload their homemade video clips onto the site featuring myriad subjects, but some videos -- including rock concerts and television shows -- are apparently being posted without the copyright holder's permission.
YouTube says users view more than 100 million video clips daily, and that they routinely delete clips that violate copyright laws. The site also insists it is not liable for the material posted on them by third parties since they did not "entice" users to violate copyright laws.

New Phoenix Internet Marketing Company Provides Quality Services

The Phoenix Internet marketing company Vertical Measures may be a new company, but there is nothing amateur about the services they offer. Vertical Measures offers a full range of Internet marketing services, including content, website optimization, link building, and other products that influence search engine rankings.
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) October 21, 2006 -- Although Vertical Measures is a new company, they are not your average start-up business. The services offered by this Phoenix Internet marketing company have been developed over several years by the company’s founders.
"You can’t be an expert at everything when building a successful business," said Arnie Kuenn, President of Vertical Measures. "We focus on search engine marketing, paid search, and lead conversion, so that our customers can focus on their business expertise."
The founders of the Phoenix based Internet marketing company also believe that by specializing in one area, Internet marketing, they can offer their customers better quality services than if they tried to do it all. Therefore, all of the services they offer are geared toward increasing their clients’ website traffic and conversions. The key to Internet marketing is getting the search engines’ attention, and Vertical Measures’ multi-faceted approach utilizes a variety of methods to make a client’s site stand out from the crowd.
One of the factors that search engines use to rank websites is a site’s relevance to the search terms, which is determined by the presence of keywords on the web pages. Therefore, choosing the right keywords can determine the success of an Internet business. To meet this need, Vertical Measures’ Internet marketing services include keyword research services, such as keyword analysis and recommendations for search engine optimization, and keyword rank reporting to demonstrate the effectiveness of keyword usage. Their search engine optimization services ensure that every page of the client’s website is optimized to pull in search engine traffic. The company also offers providing content, such as keyword articles, press releases, and company blogs; whether posted on the client’s website or submitted to other websites, these search engine optimized (SEO) materials direct valuable search engine traffic to the client’s website.
Another critical factor that determines search engine ranking is the number of external links leading back to the website. To help increase a site’s visibility, Vertical Measures offers quality link-building services, such as an analysis of competitors’ links, a link-building strategy, and a complete link-building campaign for customers who don’t have the time or the know-how to address this facet of marketing on their own.
Vertical Measures also offers a variety of other consulting services, including lead generation and pay-per-click consulting. Lead generation, such as researching the market, building emailing lists, using autoresponders, sending newsletters, and creating marketing videos, are an important part of converting website traffic, but the sheer number of options available can be overwhelming for some entrepreneurs. The Phoenix Internet marketing company also analyzes current pay-per-click (ppc) campaigns, performs research on the ad copy most likely to get results, and makes suggestions on running a successful Internet PPC campaign.
“Your job is to run your business. Our job is to make sure your business gets noticed,” said Kuenn. “As long as we both stick to what we know, we’ll make a great team.”

Feds Arrest 125 For Child-Porn

Capping an investigation of an Internet site from which subscribers purchased photos and videos of children as young as 6 months old engaged in sex acts with adults, federal authorities arrested 125 people in a series of nationwide arrests.
Many of the arrests occurred Wednesday in a case that originated in New Jersey, but quickly spread to 22 states. Additional arrests are expected.
“When I say `hard-core' pornography, I am talking about child pornography that includes images of children as young as six months involved in bondage and sodomy,” U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie said. “This type of depraved conduct is something a civilized society cannot tolerate.”
Among the suspects arrested were a Bible camp counselor from Vancouver, Wash.; a Boy Scout leader from Mission, Texas; a police officer and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer.
Fourteen people were arrested Wednesday in New Jersey, including a pharmaceutical researcher and a college student. Three others were charged previously in the state.
Among those arrested was an information technology manager from northern New Jersey. According to court documents, federal agents searched his home and found more than 500 images of child pornography on his computer, including one showing an adult male having anal sex with a male infant.
The defendants were charged with either possession or receipt of child pornography. The New Jersey defendants were to be released on $100,000 bail each, ordered to stay away from minors and not use a computer for anything other than work purposes.
They could face up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000 if convicted.
Christie said none of the defendants appeared in any of the images they obtained from the Web site.
He would not identify the Web site or say if it is still in operation. In response to a reporter who asked whether if the site operators had been arrested, their names would have been announced at the press conference, Christie said, “Hypothetically, there could be persons who are cooperating with us and we don't announce that.”
Prosecutors said the Web site alerted subscribers that its content was illegal and urged them to be discreet about their purchases.
Several of those arrested nationwide have prior records for molesting or sexually assaulting children. One defendant from San Diego told agents at his arrest that he had molested at least eight children over a 30-year period, and boasted of being able to identify particularly vulnerable children.
Another defendant from Sacramento, Calif., was found to be in possession of a hand-held video camera with a videotape showing him sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl.
“I'm the father of four young children between the ages of 13 and 3,” Christie said. “This is every parent's worst nightmare. It is just deeply disturbing to know there are people like this out there in our neighborhoods.”

Investors tricked over stock spam

The stock value of a company targeted by a spam campaign rose 12 per cent in a single day, according to security experts.
Spammers purchased stock in the unnamed company at a cheap price and then artificially inflated its price by emailing ‘good news’ about the firm to others before selling at a profit. Investors fooled by the scams are often left with heavy losses.
A spokeswoman for industry regulator the Financial Services Authority (FSA) says these scams are very difficult to prevent.
‘The shares are often small US stock, so their price can shoot up rapidly. It’s very difficult to track these emails as they are often generated from outside the UK and therefore outside the FSA’s remit,’ she said.
Luis Corrons, director of vendor PandaLabs, which conducted the research, says these stock scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
‘Attacks of this nature in the future could not just be for direct profit but also as a weapon against companies, similar to the way in which companies are blackmailed with threats to crash their IT systems,’ he said.
Security vendor Sophos reported last month that spammers have approached companies saying they can boost stock prices by up to 250 per cent using junk mail. Sophos says these stock campaigns account for 15 per cent of all spam.
Peter Firstbrook, research director at Gartner, says this is not a new phenomenon.
‘This has been going on for a while. It can be difficult to intercept using content-based filtering because it is not unique. Moreover, a lot of this type of spam is image-based, which makes detection difficult.’

Darwinian Evolution On Internet

Technology has evolved to the point that the entire works of Charles Darwin can now be accessed online.
The writings of Darwin, the father of the theory of evolution, can now be downloaded at the click of a mouse - and even accessed in audio form and burnt onto CDs or put into iPods.
The 50,000 pages of text and 40,000 images, including the seminal work On The Origin of Species, have been put online by the University of Cambridge, and means anyone with an internet connection can read his work.
Many of the articles - including extracts from his field notebook and 800 page diary when he visited the Galapagos Isles on the Beagle - have never been transcribed or published before, and others are appearing online for the first time.
The website was the brainchild of Dr John van Wyhe, whose own attempts to read Darwin's work ran into trouble at a university library in Asia.
Only able to access one book, he turned to the internet - but found the articles he retrieved were incomplete and missing important information.
Dr van Wyhe resolved to make Darwin's work accessible to all by placing it on the internet - and although the site is aimed at Darwin scholars, anyone with an interest in the scientist's work can download it for free.
Dr van Wyhe also determined to make Darwin's work available to all, and text-to-speech software was used to translate the articles into mp3 audio files. These can be put on to CDs or iPods.
"The idea is to make these important works as accessible as possible - some people can only get at Darwin that way", said Dr van Wyhe, the project's director.
"It's also a new medium and there's no reason why if you can search and read the text and look at images of the original that you shouldn't be able to download and listen to it as well."
He said he realised that information on Darwin could be hard to research when his attempts to study him in the Asian university proved fruitless.
"For a scholar it was incredibly frustrating," he said. "What we needed was a comprehensive electronic collection of Darwin's writings and I realised that since no one had done it I could create it myself."
Included amongst work appearing online for the first time are first editions of the Journal of Researches (1839), The Descent of Man (1871) and The Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle (1838 -43). The second to fifth editions of the Origin also appear online for the first time.
Texts can be viewed as colour originals or in transcript form, and there are versions in German, Danish and Russian.
The site also includes the most comprehensive Darwin bibliography ever published and the largest catalogue of Darwin's handwritten manuscripts.
The current site provides access to about half of the material it is hoped will be available online by 2009.

Individuals have to be savvy about thwarting cyber-crime

Canadians are shopping online, paying bills online, and doing their banking online in steadily greater numbers. One-quarter of all Canadians now pay their bills online, and we bought $36 billion worth of goods and services online in 2005, double the 2003 figure.
About the only thing growing as fast as e-commerce and e-banking, it seems, is e-crime. Identity theft, credit-card fraud and other such online abuses are a growing cause of concern for the authorities, lawmakers, merchants and ordinary Internet users. There are no reliable Canadian figures on cyber-crime, but United States estimates put the annual cost of such offences there at $6 billion or more. The British government cites a 50-per-cent increase in two years.
The latest concerns, in Canada and elsewhere, include "vishing" -- using Voice-over-Internet-Protocol service to trick consumers into giving their credit card numbers.
So far, concern has not given way to much action by the Canadian government. Canadian justice ministers had the issue on their agenda when they met last week in Newfoundland, but the communique issued after the meeting said only that they had "asked their officials to continue to work on the development of initiatives and approaches to address this important issue." That won't do much.
Fortunately, the private sector is taking the lead in the continual technological and public-awareness "arms race" with cyber-scammers. Examples are easy to find: MasterCard has just announced Online Fraud Monitor, "an advanced fraud detection and mitigation tool that uses a sophisticated risk-scoring model to detect potential fraudulent PIN debit transactions in real time, during the authorization process." ING Direct Canada is introducing new log-in procedures designed to make sure that "You know it's us" and "We know it's you."
Several big companies which sell via the Internet, or which provide Internet-related hardware and services, have united to designate October as Cyber Security Awareness Month, issuing a deluge of reminders about firewalls, anti-spy software, common sense and so on.
It's only natural for the private sector to move forcefully into preventive online security. By the nature of e-commerce, it is e-merchants and service providers who have the strongest incentive to fight online fraud.
Governments, meanwhile, have been able to do little beyond police work once frauds are detected. The Internet being what it is, national authorities in each country are severely handicapped in fighting international scams. The Canadian Bankers Association has called for identity theft to be made a crime, even though most dishonest use of someone's personal data should already be covered by existing fraud laws.
But how can any law be enforced if you have been tricked into giving personal data to an online scammer somewhere in the backwoods of Bosnia, say? The ultimate beneficiary of the fraud may live only a few blocks from you, but proving that is a daunting challenge.
One useful measure would be greater control on spam e-mail which, as a federal task force noted last year, is increasingly mutating to include spyware, viruses and other threats. The task force made 22 proposals, including a call for more international co-operation against spam-based Internet fraud, and a call for governments to work with Internet service providers to choke off wholesale spam.
While government continues to mull these problems, individuals need to use cautious common sense. Internet commerce is convenient and efficient, but by now everyone should know that there can be dangers, too. Inform yourself.

Child Exploitation Tracking System gets nationwide cooperation

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre has been joined by Microsoft to deliver a new technology that allows police forces to share and analyse information for investigating child sex offences in the UK.
The Child Exploitation Tracking System (CETS) has been running at the CEOP centre since the launch of the centre in April 2006 and is today being offered as a proof of concept to police forces across the country, with Essex, West Midlands, South Wales police forces and the Hi-tech Crime Unit of Scotland all undertaking a pilot programme. Terry Grange (ACPO lead on Sex Offenders and Chief Constable of Dyfed-Powys), and Robin Crorie (PITO Central Customer) have formally written to the CEOP centre supporting the CETS proof of concept on a national basis.
The technology allows the creation of a virtual investigation team, where police officers across the country can share and analyse information on suspected offenders, avoiding duplication and coordinating a national approach that will reduce the risk of offenders moving across geographic borders to avoid detection.
CETS was first developed by the Canadian police, international law enforcement experts and Microsoft to help law enforcement battle online child exploitation. CETS was developed following a personal e-mail plea from Toronto Police Detective Sergeant Paul Gillespie to Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates. Microsoft has donated more than $7 million (USD) to date for the system's development and to assist in its global deployment.
Jim Gamble, Chief Executive of the CEOP centre, said "Criminals use technology to further their needs and now we are turning the tables and saying enough is enough. CETS has already proved its worth here in the CEOP Centre so it is time to move that prototype on to the road of UK policing. We have to explore how it can be applied force by force, how it can join up investigations and create that all important virtual police presence and overall how it will help us in staying that vital one step ahead of the criminal mind. The results look good and as the rollout gathers pace we can and we will send out a very clear message to offenders - we will track you, we will bring you to account."
CETS was created to increase the effectiveness of investigators and teams by providing them with software to store, search, share and analyze large quantities of evidence and connect the cases across law enforcement agencies and government jurisdictions. Previously, investigators had to manually sort through files and photos, making it challenging to analyze the large volumes of information gathered during investigations.
"CETS is a true example of integration among law enforcement and industry, said Steve Ballmer, CEO at Microsoft Corp. "We are proud to partner with the CEOP centre in the UK, to help make the internet a safer place for children."
"Microsoft wants to thank Jim and his colleagues for their devotion to countering online threats to children," added Matt Bishop, senior director, Developer Platform Evangelism, Microsoft UK. "We have worked very closely with the team at the CEOP centre and will continue to do so as more police forces adopt this technology. Together, we're determined to make the Internet safer for everyone."
In the UK the CETS technology has already been central to coordinating police investigations and analysing information. In one recent case, an individual's activities online was reported to the CEOP website on four separate occasions. By using CETS the CEOP centre investigators were able to identify a number of online identities used by various paedophiles who were attempting to contact the individual and the investigators were able to pass these to a single force for investigation.
In March 2006, CETS figured prominently in the arrest of 27 people in four countries who ran an extremely sophisticated private chat room of child exploitation.
The CEOP Centre is affiliated to the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and powers are derived from the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005. It is based in Pimlico, London with developing outreach channels to all areas of both domestic and international policing as well as industry and specialist support and educational faculties.
Background: Child Exploitation Tracking System (CETS)
The Child Exploitation Tracking System (CETS) is a unique software tool developed by Canadian police, international law enforcement officials and Microsoft Corp. to help battle child exploitation online.
Pronounced "kets," this tool helps law enforcement officials collaborate and share information with other police services based on legal agreements in place. Law enforcement officials turned to Microsoft to help solve a significant challenge they faced. CETS was created to increase the effectiveness of investigators and teams by providing them with software to store, search, share and analyze large volumes of evidence and match cases across police agencies.
Working together, Canadian police and Microsoft developed CETS in response to a personal e-mail plea in January 2003 by Toronto Police Service Sergeant Paul Gillespie to Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates. Microsoft contributed technical expertise and resources for a system designed by law enforcement for law enforcement.
It took the involvement of many to develop CETS: police around the world, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre; 26 Canadian police services; interested law-enforcement agencies from around the world including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the National Crime Squad of the U.K. and Scotland Yard; and Microsoft.
Online child exploitation is a serious problem, as Internet crimes, especially those involving children, are increasing at an unprecedented rate. Industry and law-enforcement agencies must do everything possible to stop and reverse the trends described below.
The Online Victimization report, conducted by the U.S.-based National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 2000, found the following, based on interviews with youths aged 10 to 17 who use the Internet regularly:
> Approximately one in five received a sexual solicitation or approach over the Internet in the last year.
> One in 33 received an aggressive sexual solicitation, meaning that a solicitor asked to meet them somewhere; called them on the telephone; or sent them regular mail, money or gifts.
Cooperation among law enforcement officials, government and industry is critical to make the Internet a safer place for children. Microsoft believes it has a special responsibility to provide the resources needed to address issues of Internet safety.
CETS already has played a part in several investigations across geographic boundaries, creating links that have helped apprehend online offenders and, most important, lead to the rescue of children in countries around the world.
